Historical VaR: A Practitioners Guide

In this paper we explore practical issues associated with the historical method for calculating value at risk (VaR). While the historical method is extremely easy to implement for some instruments, it can be complicated for others. The solution to these more complicated cases often requires the deft touch of a practitioner. The techniques explored in this paper may also be applicable to more complex non-parametric models such as the hybrid method.
